In 2021 the ECCO Endoscopy Workshop reached its 7th edition, and it has now become a mainstay of the educational activities of ECCO. This year it moved online as a fully virtual meeting and was organised by the Education Committee (EduCom).
Participating speakers and chairs: Ralf Bisschops, Belgium; Bu'Hussain Hayee, UK; Rosanna Cannatelli, Italy; Marietta Iacucci, UK, Pierre Ellul, Malta
The workshop was devoted to and structured for physicians or colorectal surgeons who are specialists in IBD and have at least some experience in endoscopy. The course was well attended and, despite the virtual platform, proved to be a remarkably successful event. The outstanding faculty made the course interactive by presenting very informative didactic lectures and high-quality interactive endoscopy videos and images to simulate a live endoscopy case scenario.
The principal aims of the workshop were to present the latest advances in IBD endoscopy and to increase the competence, knowledge and confidence of the participants in describing endoscopic findings in IBD accurately and in a common language, especially by adopting the evolving terminology of advanced endoscopy. Emphasis was placed on how surveillance colonoscopy should be performed and which endoscopic modality should now be adopted for the endoscopic detection and characterisation of colonic lesions and for their endoscopic treatment. We also explained the ideal step-by-step curriculum journey in order to develop competences in endoscopic diagnosis and colonic lesion management. Finally, we made the course more interesting and exciting by introducing the latest advances in artificial intelligence and its emerging role in IBD endoscopy.
The course included three sessions and state-of-the-art lectures. The main learning objectives included why, when and how to adopt key quality indicators in IBD endoscopy to improve delivery of patient care, how to write a good-quality endoscopic report and learn high-quality terminology for adoption in daily practice, and how to detect, characterise and manage colonic dysplastic lesions in IBD by using different cutting-edge endoscopic technologies, with due attention to the role of artificial intelligence.
The course was highly appreciated and well received by attendees. Despite the virtual format, it was considered interesting and informative and achieved a good overall satisfaction rate. Nevertheless, given the growing advances in endoscopic technologies and the emphasis on the quality of learning and performance, our task for the next ECCO Endoscopy Workshop in 2022 will be to introduce new and emerging advances in endoscopy, with even more innovative interaction with world class faculty, clinical endoscopy video scenarios and practical educational activities. We hope that we will by then have overcome the challenges of the past year and that there will be ample opportunity to interact with international leading experts in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Therefore, keep up to date on ECCO Educational Activities and do not miss the next editon of the ECCO Basic Imaging Workshop in collaboration with ESGAR in 2022 in Vienna!
