The N-ECCO School ran for the first time in 2010. The aim of the School is to enhance the knowledge and expertise of nurses and dietitians who are new to IBD, enabling them to provide better quality care to IBD patients throughout Europe and beyond. In addition, the N-ECCO School has become a great networking opportunity for both nurses and dietitians, allowing them to share their experiences and plans for furthering their careers and demonstrating the importance of the MDT approach to IBD care.

The 13th N-ECCO School was attended by 68 participants from 31 countries, including dietitians and IBD Nurses. The School covered various IBD topics of interest to both nurses and dietitians who work with IBD patients.

The programme for the N-ECCO School 2022 was based on experiences and feedback from 2021. International speakers, doctors, nurses and dietitians were invited to deliver presentations. The programme opened with an excellent overview of the anatomy, physiology and clinical presentation of IBD and diagnosis by Marc Ferrante, from Leuven (Belgium). Wladyslawa Czuber-Dochan, from London (UK), then discussed the vital topic of the psychosocial implications of living with IBD, including the prevalence of psychosocial problems and the importance of screening for anxiety and depression. The third speaker of the morning was Lihi Godny from Petah Tikva (Israel), who discussed the role of diet and nutritional assessment in IBD patients.

After the coffee break, Michel Adamina from Winterthur (Switzerland) provided a summary of surgeries conducted in IBD and explained how to approach the topic of surgery with IBD patients. Johan Burisch from Copenhagen (Denmark) then summarised medical treatment in IBD, and Susanna Jäghult from Stockholm (Sweden) gave an introduction to adherence among IBD patients, covering treatment adherence, adherence with follow-up care and compliance with routine testing. The second session included case studies of treatment management. Mark Samaan from London (UK) presented the case of a patient with Ulcerative Colitis and Ebbe Langholz from Hellerup (Denmark) presented a case study of a patient with Crohn's Disease.

The final session of the N-ECCO School programme was delivered by Dearbhaile O’Hanlon from London (UK), who provided a summary on nutritional support in IBD, and the programme ended with Ana Ibarra’s lecture on the nursing roles in IBD management.

N-ECCO would like to thank all the participants for attending the N-ECCO School and to offer special thanks to all the speakers and chairs. In addition, we would like to thank the ECCO Office for their support, the N-ECCO Committee members for supporting and planning the programme, and the N-ECCO National Representatives for their contributions.

We look forward to nominations for the 14th N-ECCO School in 2023!
