The 23rd ECCO IBD Intensive Course for Trainees, Berlin 2025
The 23rd IBD Intensive Course for Trainees is scheduled for February 19, 2025, immediately before the start of the ECCO Congress in Berlin. This respected ECCO Educational Initiative has been a cornerstone of IBD education since its inception in 2003, predating even the ECCO Congress itself.
The course is designed to bridge the gaps often found in IBD education during gastroenterology fellowships. It offers advanced fellows a thorough and multidisciplinary exploration of IBD, helping them to deepen their expertise. Additionally, it serves as a vital platform for young clinicians from around the world to exchange knowledge, compare medical practices and build professional networks that can lead to future collaborations. Participation is by invitation, with nominations made by ECCO National Representatives.
The course features a series of sessions led by top IBD experts, covering key topics such as epidemiology, pathogenesis and the latest in treatment strategies. For 2025, the curriculum has been refined, shifting the focus from drug-based to disease-based discussions, and including new lectures on IBD surgery — addressing a previously unmet need. These sessions will use case-based presentations to simulate real-world scenarios and promote active participation. The faculty, chosen for both their subject mastery and their teaching skills, will foster an engaging and interactive environment.
A highlight of the course is the round table discussions, where attendees can engage in small group conversations with faculty members, rotating to ensure diverse interactions. This format allows for a deeper dive into specific topics and enhances the learning experience. The third session will kick off with a lecture focusing on a holistic approach to managing IBD beyond just therapies.
Active participation is crucial to the course's success, and the organisers are committed to maintaining a welcoming and collegial atmosphere. At the end of the course, participants will receive a certificate of participation, along with CME credits.
