Letter from the ECCO President
ECCO President
Dear ECCO Family,
It was a true pleasure to reconnect with so many familiar faces at the recent 21st ECCO Congress in Stockholm, which offered an inspiring programme of outstanding presentations.
As we open this first issue of the year, I am delighted to reflect on the continued growth, innovation, and global engagement that define our community. Building on the momentum of recent years, ECCO remains firmly committed to advancing excellence in IBD care, research, and education across borders.
We are excited to share several important developments that will further strengthen our mission and broaden our global impact. Central to these efforts is the establishment of a Global Taskforce, comprising 10 experts from around the world, dedicated to promoting international collaboration in IBD research and clinical care. By fostering connections across regions, this initiative aims to disseminate best practices, expand global outreach, and ensure equitable access to high-quality education and clinical practice guidelines.
In parallel, we are pleased to announce an increase in the value of ECCO grants, reinforcing our commitment to supporting the next generation of clinicians and researchers. The creation of the ECCO Microscopic Colitis Working Group, currently chaired by Andreas Münch, also marks an important step in addressing this often under-recognised condition, encouraging focused research and improved clinical management.
This issue of ECCO News brings together a rich and diverse selection of content that reflects the breadth of activity within our community. We are proud to feature the best abstracts from the 21st Congress of ECCO, spanning fundamental science, translational research, clinical trials, and real-world evidence. These contributions highlight the scientific excellence and innovation that continue to drive progress in the field of IBD.
In addition, we present an insightful interview with Christian Maaser, ECCO’s new Education Officer, who shares his vision for the future of ECCO’s educational initiatives. Our “Meet the Reps” section returns alongside features that shine a light on the people behind our scientific community. Alongside “Meet the JCC Authors”, we are pleased to introduce the new “Meet the JCC Plus Authors” series. Following the recent launch of this open-access journal, the series offers insights into the work and perspectives of its contributors, while inviting the community to engage with this growing platform.
We also highlight the LMIC video interviews, which provide valuable perspectives on the practical realities of diagnosing and managing IBD in low- and middle-income countries, reinforcing the importance of global inclusivity. Finally, the Y-ECCO interview with Iago Rodríguez-Lago offers an engaging and inspiring perspective from one of the rising voices in our field.
Please do have a look what is awaiting you at the upcoming ECCO'27 Congress in Copenhagen.
As we move forward, let us continue to embrace collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity as the cornerstones of ECCO’s mission. Together, we can further strengthen our global community and improve the lives of patients living with IBD worldwide.
Best wishes,
Fernando Magro
