The 13th ECCO Ultrasound Workshop – Advanced, organised in collaboration with ESGAR and IBUS, was held during the 21st Congress of ECCO in Stockholm in February 2026 as part of ECCO’s Educational Programme. The workshop was attended by 179 participants and brought together international experts, fostering valuable discussions on recent advancements in intestinal ultrasound (IUS) for the management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
The programme included a series of oral presentations followed by interactive discussions incorporating ultrasound video case studies. Gabriele Dragoni and Mariangela Allocca (Italy) opened the session with presentations on the roles of IUS in postoperative recurrence and transperineal ultrasound in perianal disease, highlighting applications in both clinical practice and research settings. The first session concluded with a presentation by Bram Verstockt (Belgium) on the use of IUS, MRI and endoscopy in daily IBD practice, providing a practical framework for selection of the most appropriate imaging modality.
The second part of the workshop addressed the indications and limitations of contrast-enhanced ultrasound, small intestine contrast ultrasound and elastography. These topics were discussed, respectively, by Kerri L. Novak (Canada), Emma Calabrese (Italy) and Stephan R. Vavricka (Switzerland), who provided valuable insights and demonstrated practical applications through video-based case presentations. The high level of participant engagement contributed to dynamic discussions and the exchange of clinical experience.
For many attendees, this workshop represented the final step in the IBUS IUS training curriculum. At the end of the session, participants completed an evaluation test to obtain the IBUS training certificate.
The interactive format and clinically relevant content were highly appreciated. Participant feedback highlighted the workshop’s significant value in enhancing knowledge and supporting the practical implementation of IUS in the management of patients with IBD.
