The 6th ECCO Workshop on Imaging, a key part of ECCO's Educational Programme, took place during the 20th Congress of ECCO in Berlin in February 2025. Due to high interest, two identical sessions were held on the same day, allowing more participants to take part in this hands-on learning course. We thank all the speakers and tutors, whose expertise and dedication contributed to the success of the event. This collaborative effort brought together leading gastroenterologists from ECCO and IBUS, along with radiologists from the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR), providing a comprehensive overview of imaging modalities in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
The workshop began with two keynote lectures on the fundamentals of intestinal ultrasound (IUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), delivered by Krisztina Gecse and Pasquale Paolantonio, respectively. These presentations set the stage for the hands-on session, where 120 delegates (60 per session) were divided into small groups of ten at six learning stations. Each station was led by an expert team consisting of a gastroenterologist experienced in IUS and a radiologist, who facilitated discussions on MRI interpretation and guided participants through real-time ultrasound assessments using IUS simulators.
The curriculum covered a wide range of IBD-related imaging topics, including early diagnosis of suspected IBD, assessment of Crohn's Disease activity, identification of complications such as strictures, fistulas and abscesses, evaluation of postoperative recurrence, management of perianal Crohn's Disease and assessment of disease activity in Ulcerative Colitis. The interactive, small-group format encouraged discussion, allowing participants to exchange experiences, refine their diagnostic skills and analyse complex clinical cases. Additionally, the workshop explored the strengths and limitations of IUS and MRI, highlighting their complementary roles in optimising patient care. A dedicated discussion, led by expert radiologist Francesca Maccioni and Mariangela Allocca, further examined the benefits and limitations of both techniques and emphasised the value of their integration for a more comprehensive patient evaluation.
Beyond enhancing technical skills, the workshop provided a valuable opportunity to gain deeper insights into the evolving role of ultrasound in IBD management and the diagnostic significance of MRI. The positive feedback from participants underscored the impact of this educational experience, reaffirming the workshop’s role in advancing imaging expertise within the IBD Community.
Endoscopy Focus
In 2025, the ECCO Workshop on Endoscopy celebrated its 6th edition, firmly establishing itself as a cornerstone of ECCO’s Educational Programme. Designed for physicians aiming to refine their skills and deepen their understanding of endoscopic assessment, monitoring and treatment of IBD and its complications, the workshop once again proved to be a dynamic and engaging experience.
As in previous years, the course provided a comprehensive overview of endoscopy in IBD. The initial sessions focused on essential yet foundational topics, including the use and interpretation of endoscopic indices. Through a blend of theoretical insights and hands-on practice, participants were reminded of the critical role endoscopy plays in achieving mucosal healing and optimising patient care.
The latter part of the workshop delved into more advanced topics, such as stricture management techniques and high-definition endoscopy. Participants also explored the latest updates in dysplasia management and the appropriate timing and methods for surveillance endoscopies. The event concluded with a forward-looking session on the emerging role of artificial intelligence in IBD care.
The faculty featured a distinguished panel of leading IBD and endoscopy experts, all of whom are recognised authorities in the field. The workshop received very positive feedback from participants, and preparations are already underway for the 2026 edition, which will include fresh content and discussions reflecting the latest advancements in endoscopic practice for IBD.
