The 18th Congress of ECCO in numbers
6,754 delegates attended the 18th Congress of ECCO in Copenhagen, Denmark
The 18th Congress of ECCO, Copenhagen, Denmark – Inflammatory Bowel Diseases 2023, held on March 1-4, 2023, attracted a total number of 6,754 delegates from 100 different countries. Since the inaugural ECCO Congress in 2006 in Amsterdam, at which there were 350 delegates, participant numbers have steadily increased, as shown in the graph below. Despite the COVID-19 outbreak in the beginning of 2020, we are happy that this high number of delegates had the chance to participate in the ECCO’23 Congress in Copenhagen.
The pie chart below divides delegate attendance at the 18th Congress of ECCO by continent. Approximately 74% of all participants came from Europe and about 26% from outside of Europe.
The pie chart below illustrates the professions represented at the 18th Congress of ECCO. The majority of participants were Physicians (33%), followed by representatives from Industy (24%) and Endoscopists (9%). Other attendees included clinical researchers (7%) and IBD Nurses (6%), Fellows/Trainees (5,76%), Scientists (3%) along with surgeons, pharmacists (2% each), and paediatricians (1%). Students, Dietitians, Research Nurses, Radiologists and Psychologists represented approx. 7.24% of all delegates.
A key component of the success of the ECCO Congress is the rising number of high-quality abstracts accepted for oral, digital oral and poster presentations. An outline of the evolution of abstract submissions is displayed here:
This year’s industry exhibition attracted 29 exhibitors, mainly pharmaceutical companies but also publishing houses and non-profit organizations. The total net exhibition area was 2,084 m2.
