The 16th Congress of ECCO in numbers
6,798 delegates attended the 16th Congress of ECCO Virtual
The 16th Congress of ECCO Virtual – Inflammatory Bowel Diseases 2021, held on July 2-3 & 8-10, 2021, attracted a total number of 6,798 delegates from 104 different countries. Since the inaugural ECCO Congress in 2006 in Amsterdam, at which there were 350 delegates, participant numbers have steadily increased, as shown in the graph below. Despite the COVID-19 outbreak in the beginning of 2020, we are happy that this high number of delegates had the chance to participate in the ECCO’21 Virtual Congress.

The pie chart below divides delegate attendance at the 16th Congress of ECCO Virtual by continent. Approximately 61% of all participants came from Europe and about 39% from outside of Europe.

The pie chart below illustrates the professions represented at the 16th Congress of ECCO. The majority of participants were physicians (41%), followed by endoscopists (16%) and representatives from industry (11%). Other attendees included clinical researchers (7%) and IBD Nurses, Surgeons and Fellows/Trainees (4% each) along with scientists, pharmacists, and paediatricians (2% each). Students, dietitians, research nurses, radiologists and psychologists represented approx. 2.16 % of all delegates.

High-quality Abstracts
A key component of the success of the ECCO Congress is the rising number of high-quality abstracts accepted for oral, digital oral and poster presentations. An outline of the evolution of abstract submissions is displayed here:

Industry exhibition
This year´s virtual exhibition attracted 17 pharmaceutical companies which were represented with 19 virtual exhibition booths. All together 22 companies were represented with a satellite symposium, exhibition booth and through sponsorship.
