The N-ECCO Chair, Susanna Jäghult, opened the 16th N-ECCO Network Meeting by welcoming 171 nurses from around the world. This was the second virtual Congress due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The programme started with a session on medication and new developments in the field of IBD. James Lindsay, from London (UK), delivered an excellent session on new medication and treatment options for IBD patients. The presentation was followed by Janneke van der Woude, from Rotterdam (the Netherlands), who talked about treatment safety for pregnant women with IBD. The third presentation covered “Combination of biologic therapies” and was delivered by Bram Verstockt (Leuven, Belgium). After a short coffee break, we had a session on “Innovation in research and practice”. First, Susanna Jäghult and Linn Inganäs from Stockholm (Sweden) and Revital Barkan from Petah Tikva (Israel) gave a presentation on the “Challenges and opportunities of virtual clinics in IBD”: a very pertinent topic given the current pandemic. The session was followed by four best nurse abstract presentations, which were delivered by Els De Dycker from Rotselaar, Belgium (“Type of patient education impacts the willingness to switch from an IV to SC of a biological in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A multicentre, comparative study”), Giedre Herrerias from Sao Paulo, Brazil (“The importance of the multidisciplinary team and its impact on quality of life and medication adherence in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease”), Ulrica Lovén Wickman from Kalmar, Sweden (“Medication adherence in relation to health-related quality of life in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease – A cross-sectional study”) and Parichat Thapwong from London, UK (“A systematic review of the impact of IBD on family members”).

After lunch, we had two excellent sessions, one on dietary approaches in IBD and one on psychological care in IBD, delivered by Lihi Godny from Petah Tikva (Israel) and Alexa Duff from London (UK), respectively. The final session of the day included three presentations. James Lindsay delivered a comprehensive presentation on the transition from paediatric to adult care, entitled “How the adult’s clinic takes care of the young adult”. Michel Adamina, from Switzerland, provided an excellent overview on surgery in IBD, and Simona Fourie, from the UK, covered the very important and challenging topic of “Relationship, sexuality and family planning”. The presentations stimulated a lot of interest amongst the delegates, and the virtual nature of the Congress helped the nurse delegates to submit a large number of questions to the presenters. This contributed to a vibrant virtual discussion. If you missed any of the presentations, you can watch the recordings on the ECCO’22 Congress platform.

The meeting was closed by Susanna Jäghult, whose tenure as N-ECCO Chair came to an end. She announced that the new Chair is Wladyslawa Czuber-Dochan. In addition, Petra Hartmann stepped down from the committee and two new members joined, Simona Radice and Marie Anderson. Susanna thanked the members of the N-ECCO Committee for their support and their contributions to the work of the committee. Wladyslawa Czuber-Dochan thanked Susanna Jäghult for leading the committee over the last three years. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in Copenhagen in March 2023.
